Backed by William Randolph Hearst, Thomas Hisgen ran for president on the Independence Party ticket in 1908. He gained notoriety by refusing to sell his company to the Standard Oil Co. and was recruited to run for Governor of Massachusetts in 1907. Unsurprisingly he come up short winning the presidency in 1908 with only 0.55% of the national popular vote. The Independence Party dissolved and most members rejoined the Democratic Party.
