1948 Our Common Heritage Freedom Train

To celebrate American exceptionalism after WWII, the Freedom Train toured all 48 states, carrying copies of the Declaration of Independence, Bill of Rights, Emancipation Proclamation, Gettysburg Address, Magna Carta, and the Mayflower Compact. The train would only make stops where local officials would allow integrated waiting lines, leading to several canceled stops in southern states. This 1 1/4" button from 1948 is a fascinating piece of Civil Rights history. Excellent condition.
